Colias croceus is commonly know as the Clouded Yellow. It is a small butterfly of the family Pieridae, the yellows and whites in the butterfly world. This one is painted from the collection of I R P Heslop. The butterfly expert Matthew Oates, has described Heslop as an ‘extreme butterfly collector’.

Ian Robert Penicuick Hislop (1904-1970) was born in Bristol and later travelled widely in the diplomatic service. Much of his astonishing collection can be found in the collection of Bristol Museum, where this painting was made.
